You know the rules.
Go to college.
Keep good grades even though you’d rather get drunk while dancing and wake up barely remembering it all.
Meet a nice, hot guy and tell him your secrets until the sky turns pink.
Dream big, but then when you graduate…
Time to stop dreaming.
Be practical.
Worry about how your life choices will look on your resume.
Sell your soul for a paycheck.
Wear Ann Taylor even though it feels like a costume.
Say cringe things like “circle back.”
Buy a car.
Get a house.
You should be so grateful.
Sitting in rush-hour traffic that turns into empty freeways after 9 a.m. because for some reason, everyone needs to start work at the same time.
Why?
Nobody ever asks these questions, or at least they stop asking them at some point because you realize the answer will drive you crazy.
There’s no reason.
None at all.
It’s just how it’s done.
What you’re supposed to do.
Kill your soul to fit in.
To kill the pain of not belonging.
The pain the paycheck and the Gucci bag and the Equinox membership is supposed to fill.
Only it doesn’t.
Because the real, true pain in life is not belonging to yourself.
Disconnected from your soul.
Detached from the things you’re meant to create.
The dreams you once had.
The dreams that still exist.
Everyone’s marching in line —
Wearing the same clothes, watching the same shows.
Listening to the same music.
Technology was supposed to free us, yet in many ways, it’s made us clones.
We spend so much time scrolling the algorithm, we’ve become the algorithm.
It programs our minds.
Tells us what we should want, who we’re supposed to be.
Copy paste.
Copy paste.
Copy….
Eff it.
Break the mold.
Be who you were meant to be.
Sit in the sun. (without sunscreen. that stuff will kill you before the sun ever does.)
Make things.
Fail.
Fail harder.
Fail faster.
Be messy.
Be willing to have none of it figured out.
Be willing to take a risk.
Be willing to keep going.
Because you’re not a copy paste soul.
You have a purpose, a destiny, a calling to fulfill.
You were born with a vision in your heart, and your purpose is to bring it to life.
It doesn’t actually matter if you succeed.
Or if it becomes your career.
Or you get rich, although sure that’d be nice.
You can’t buy freedom.
You can’t buy happiness or fulfillment or peace.
It’s something that comes from within.
By virtue of making bold decisions and choices and deciding to do the only thing that ever mattered —
To be who you really are.
And to love that person.
