How to decide between business ideas
Even if you’ve been stressed and debating for literal years
Announcing May’s training for the Mindset Membership!
Money mindset for writers, creatives, healers, coaches and spiritual entrepreneurs
I’ll never forget getting a hate email for selling a $77 meditation course after giving months of free content.
The person said I should read the book “Go Givers Sell More.”
I got offended at the time because deep down I felt bad about selling, but the truth is, she was probably broke and upset she couldn’t afford the course.
So many writers, creatives, healers and spiritual entrepreneurs under-earn (and stay stuck in day jobs) because their mindset causes them to undervalue their gifts to avoid upsetting people who were never going to pay them.
If you struggle to understand how to monetize your work in a way that feels authentic and soulful…
If you’ve ever felt guilty for charging or gross for selling…
You need to be in this training! I will share the exact money mindset shifts that led to my first $23k launch for a 40-day yoga program — not selling business! — and an $18k month though high-ticket self-discovery coaching — again, not teaching business!
Join now! Date in May and time TBA.
If you’re stuck between business ideas and terrified of picking the wrong one, this blog is going to change that.
What I’m sharing with you today would’ve saved me years of trial and error, and helped me make full-time income in my business much faster.
Important caveat: This blog will only help you if you feel called to a greater purpose, and want to build a business by helping others with your hard-won life wisdom.
I’m not the girl for you if you want a faceless brand (your face builds trust), only care about money, or want to get rich quick.
I believe your message is worth millions, and you deserve a business that gives you time, financial, location, creative, and health freedom —
But that’s not something you create by snapping your fingers.
You’re going to have to learn skills, navigate failure and rejection, invest in yourself with both time and money, and pour your heart into building something bigger than you BEFORE you have any guarantee of return.
Most people aren’t willing to do that, but this community is for bold women who will stop at nothing to create the business and life of their dreams
I know you have a lot of STUFF going on beneath the surface — fears, doubts, and limiting beliefs. And I will help you sort through all of that.
This is my area of mastery. I’m really good at pinpointing the exact belief or pain stopping you from starting or growing your business.
I will also give you a simple, practical exercise to choose your business idea TODAY. (Does that feel scary?! Does a part of you not WANT to choose because it’s safer to stay in indecision? If so, definitely sit with that because those fears are stopping you from clarity.)
Before we get into the how-to, I want to make a key point:
The most important thing to know about deciding between business ideas is you literally can’t make a wrong choice.
If you do make a so-called wrong choice, you’ll soon realize it, and be able to course correct.
For example, when I quit my 8 to 6 (why do people even call it a 9 to 5? That would actually be a cakewalk), I planned to freelance write.
Deep down, I knew it wasn’t THE thing I was meant to do, but it was the NEXT thing.
I built my freelance career up to a full-time income in my first year, doing content marketing for companies and also writing magazine articles.
It was fun, but didn’t pay that well, and I was tired of reporting what other people were saying. I had my own ideas I wanted to express.
I didn’t know what that looked like yet, but giving myself permission to explore that without fully knowing what it would look like was an important part of the process.
Sometimes the NEXT thing is exactly what you need to find THE thing.
Because the deeper truth about why you can’t decide on a business idea is that it’s not about logic. It’s about giving yourself permission to want what you want, and believe you can actually create it.
I wanted to start a blog for years, from the moment they became a thing.
I’d left a trail of abandoned blogs throughout the years, and often kick myself for not starting sooner. Oh well, it’s a good thing I started when I did.
No matter how saturated or hard to stand out you think it is now, it’ll be even more saturated and harder to stand out in another 10 years.
The best time to start is always now.
But certain limiting beliefs stopped me from posting consistently:
The frustration of publishing into a void and not seeing how my dream of building an audience would come true.
Not knowing what I wanted to write about, and feeling like my writing sucked.
Feeling like I had to have it all figured out before I could become consistent.
Thinking that if I was meant to be a famous writer, someone would have already discovered me by now. That because it felt hard, it wasn’t meant to be.
Seeing no clear path to making money.
But then came a moment that changed everything.
I had quit my toxic, high-turnover office job and was successfully freelancing, but I still wasn’t happy.
We were living someplace I didn’t like, and I felt like my life was at a dead end.
I told myself that if we moved, then I’d be happy, but something within me said:
You want to move so you can be happy, so why don’t you just remove the middle man and be happy now?
That set off an incredible journey of spiritual awakening, and as that unfolded, one thing became clear —
It was time to start my blog.
Only I wasn’t starting it to get rich or famous. I was starting it because I had always wanted to do it, and I often felt like a passenger in ride of my life.
I didn’t want to be a passenger anymore.
I wanted to dig deep inside of myself, find my strength and passion and courage, and build something I actually cared about.
It didn’t matter that I had no idea where it would all go.
For once in my life, I decided to trust.
My blog led to creating courses helping others heal emotionally, which led to a yearlong mastermind helping women stop endless daydreaming and start making money following their hearts.
And today, I coach women who want to build online businesses around their healing journeys, fueled by a powerful personal brand.
This is the best business for soulful, creative women who want to make a lot of money while enjoying a flexible lifestyle so they can care for their homes, health and families.
Creative women aren’t meant to work 9 to 5s.
We’re meant to monetize our creativity while helping others overcome the same struggles we experienced, so they don’t have to suffer like we did.
Like Ram Dass said, we’re all just walking each other home.
If you want clarity on your business idea, here’s the process I guide my clients through:
Most of my clients come to me feeling stuck between ideas. By the end of our first session together, they know exactly what to focus on, and the bigger mission and purpose for their life.
Have patience with the inner work portion, and do that first. Without doing the inner work, you’ll either stay stuck and not choose at all, or choose based on fear and not what you really want.
1. Fully accept where you are.
Release any emotional pain or judgment about the past, especially career paths you tried but didn’t work out.
What happened in the past has zero influence on your future, unless you let it.
This step mostly involves processing and releasing your emotions because accepting your feelings about a situation is the gateway to accepting the situation itself.
Underneath emotional struggle lies clarity.
2. Acknowledge your fears, doubts and limiting beliefs.
Your doubts will control you if you don’t become aware of them.
Part of the reason you struggle to find clarity is likely because you tell yourself stories that you can’t make money doing what you want…
(You can monetize literally anything. My first courses were written PDFs - not videos - fleshed out with a Facebook group and sometimes calls, and I charged anywhere from $77 to $497.)
Or stories that you only have a certain idea because you see everyone else doing it…
(You’re called to it for a reason. Trust yourself.)
Or that a specific path is an easy sure thing while the path you REALLY want is slow and uncertain.
(Easy sure things don’t exist.)
Journal out all your negative or limiting beliefs, find the emotional source if necessary, and write new beliefs.
3. Identify your ideal lifestyle.
A lot of times we get carried away by huge visions that don’t match the reality of how we want our daily lives to feel.
Like one day I had an idea to do online marketing for realtors. (I sold houses for a very short minute and am obsessed with real estate.)
I wrote out a whole marketing plan, created service packages and entire agency in my head before realizing that’s not actually how I want to live my life.
Journal on how you want to spend your day, how you want your work to feel, what kinds of work you want to do.
4. Write out all your business ideas, get clear on exactly what each vision would look like, and then feel into what most excites you.
When ideas feel vague, it’s hard to decide. So bring it to life. What would each path involve and require?
How would it all feel?
Ultimately, that feeling of excitement, curiosity or expansion is the one to follow.
You don’t have to figure it all out. Living your purpose requires you to trust, have blind faith and take the next right step before you.
Sometimes the only way to know if something is for you, is to try it.
Even if it’s not your thing, now you know. It’s not taking up head space anymore, and that allows you to try the next idea.
The only way you lose is if you either try nothing at all, or beat yourself up over things that don’t work out, and give up.
Pick a path and devote 30 to 90 days to following it before making adjustments.
This the work. Building a business is 80% mindset and energy — inner work.
You can see that because with clarity now on your next step, a whole new set of fears, doubts and limiting beliefs will come up!
Remember — any thought that says you can’t is a lie.
(This is also the work we explore in the Mindset Membership each month.)
All the love,
Suzanne
